Exploring Tokyo’s Museums – Part 1: The National Museum of the Modern Art, Tokyo

The leaves are turning shades of yellow and red here in Tokyo, filling the city with the calm beauty of autumn.

It is perfect season to walk around Tokyo, so I walked around the imperial palace where trees are beautiful.

After visiting the Imperial Palace, my favorite thing to do is to stop by a museum near the Hirakawa Gate.

This museum holds special exhibitions throughout the year, but I recommend its permanent exhibition.

The museum has a diverse and impressive collection.
Since it’s a permanent exhibition, the admission fee is just 500 yen for adults, making it an easy place to drop by anytime.

The exhibits are changed every few months. When I visited yesterday, there were Rodin’s work and paintings by Cézanne…

I forgot to take photos, but there were also early works by Yayoi Kusama, as well as pieces by Ryusei Kishida and Taro Okamoto on display.

It offers a fascinating journey through the history of art, from the late 19th century to today.

What excited me the most was that I was able to see a painting by my favorite artist.

This is a painting by Yoshitomo Nara.

He has held solo exhibitions in countries such as Spain and the U.K., and has many fans overseas. I’m one of them, too.
I used to live in Aomori, which is Nara’s birthplace, and the museum there often held special exhibitions of his art. That’s how I became a big fan of him.
I really love his unique characters and use of colors.

After enjoying the exhibition, I bought pin badges of Nara at the museum shop to put on my bag. It makes me so happy!
Isn’t it cute?
